How Cornwall Training Hub can support your practice …

General Practice Pharmacy Forum
We are pleased to support the launch of the new General Practice Pharmacy Forum run by local GP pharmacists to support education, training and best practice networking. This is open to
pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and events will be running quarterly with local and national speakers. The first event will be taking place on 7 March at St Erme. Further details and booking arrangements can be found on our website.

Leadership Development
We now have a well-established suite of leadership development programmes for all levels within general practice. These include Leading the Business, Leading from the Middle and Stepping into Management. They are bespoke programmes mixing formal education with coaching and action learning, which help you gain an understanding of yourself as a leader and how to work more effectively with others. We are shortly recruiting for our second cohort of the ‘Leading from the Middle’ programme. Please see our website for further details on all our leadership offers, or to register your interest in one of our courses.

Pharmacy Tech Apprenticeships
Practices have been working in partnership with RCHT and community pharmacy and we are delighted to now have six pharmacy technicians who have completed their two-year apprenticeship and are now entering the workforce. Salary funded through HEE, this is a great way of growing your own team. Funding for the next cohort is likely to be available from September, but arrangements would need to be in place in advance of the bid. If you are considering employing a Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, please register your interest by emailing:

Practice Manager Support
Over the last 12 months, we have been working with Practice Managers to build a network of support for new Practice Managers into post and for existing Practice Managers to connect with one another on a regular basis, share best practice and build a community. If your Practice Manager is retiring but would like to mentor new Practice Managers, they can join our Practice Manager Advisory Team where they would be paid for their time spent mentoring other Practice Managers. Equally, if you have a Practice Manager that is new into post and would like some support, we can put them in contact with one of our team who will provide regular mentorship to help them in the first few months. For further details or to request support, please contact:
elizabeth.symons1@nhs.net

GP Partner Support
We offer a range of support to GP partners, whether you are a new Partner, an aspiring Partner, or an existing Partner. This includes courses, webinars and personal development to help you develop your workforce, manage your team, and manage and improve your business. Whether you are looking for appraisal training for non-GPs, Estates and property management, individual GP
mentoring support or a workshop on strategic planning, we have various options available which can be viewed on our GP Support pages. We are continually adding to the support we provide with additional courses and webinars coming online over the coming months. If you want to develop yourself as a leader, you can also join our leadership development programme ‘Leading the Business’. Visit our leadership pages to view details and register your interest for the next cohort starting in 2024. If you have any ideas for future training or support please contact elizabeth.symons1@nhs.net

Protected learning time
We are working together to put forward a proposal for facilitating protected learning time for practices. This has been raised as an issue on numerous occasions and it is something that occurs as a matter of course in other areas of the county. We will be finalising a business case this month with a view to taking this to the Collaborative Board for agreement and sign-off and will keep you updated on progress and details of how to access the offer once it is confirmed.

Building GP Capacity
We appreciate GP capacity, particularly getting Locum cover or recruiting to vacant posts, remains a continued issue across most, if not all practices. We wanted to reassure you that we are also working on your behalf to try and build additional capacity. We have recently advertised and are recruiting remote Locum GPs to our Locum Bank who will be available to any practice. Two are currently undergoing recruitment checks and once cleared, they can be booked through Rotamaster. We are also going back out to advert in GP Pulse with a continued campaign to try and attract county GP’s.

Don’t forget, when advertising your own vacancies, you can also promote the benefits the Training Hub is able to provide, which include:

  • Relocation costs (subject to agreement)
  • Access to qualified GP mentors
  • Access to our Primary Care Education Programme
  • Additional support for Newly Qualified GPs including the New to Practice programme
