Trainee Practice Manager Development Programme starting 18 September 2024

We are excited to be offering a second cohort of our Trainee Practice Manager Development Programme.  This is a bespoke programme to enable Practices to grow their own managers of the future and is the first programme of it’s kind nationally.

It is especially aimed at Assistant Practice Managers, new Practice Managers or Aspiring future managers.  This is a 12-18 month dedicated development programme, incorporating an ILM Leadership and Management Award and optional Coaching and Mentoring qualification.  The programme is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge required of managers in General Practice.  The programme has been developed to align to the competencies required by the Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM), enabling you to gather evidence to support your professional accreditation as you learn, if this is the career path you want to take.

During the course of the programme you will be expected to attend training for one day a fortnight, at various GP Practice locations across the county.  On the days when you are not training, the expectation is you will receive protected learning time to complete assignments, collate evidence and undertake reflective journals to embed your learning. The programme starts on Wednesday 18 September and all participants will be expected to attend the training every Wednesday.  A full schedule of the programme can be provided ahead of the start date.

What does the course cover?

Key topic areas include:

  • Personal leadership development
  • Interpersonal skills including influencing and persuasion, coaching, and communication
  • Managing and developing teams
  • HR people development
  • Facilities and Estates management
  • Practice Finances
  • Working with patients/complaints
  • Business Development
How will this be delivered?

This will be delivered as a blended learning programme, including taught modules, interactive discussions, case studies, guest speakers, mentoring, coaching, and action learning.  Some training will be delivered by Crisp Development, who have been delivering our leadership development programmes over the last two years.  The rest of the course will be delivered by a mix of Cornwall Training Hub, guest experts from across General Practices in Cornwall and a wide range of speakers from different roles.  The programme will be overseen by Nicola Davies, a very experienced local Practice Manager and founding member of the IGPM, who is passionate about developing the managers of the future.

Course Cost

This course is funded through the Training Hub via retention funding.  However, due to the cost of places on this course, we will charge your practice £250 if you are no longer able to keep your place and we are unable to find a substitute.
