What is Advanced Practice

Advanced Practice has developed in many areas and in many ways over the last 25 years. Recently Health Education England have drawn these numerous different threads into a multi-professional framework for all those working at advanced level.

Advanced clinical practice is delivered by experienced, registered health and care practitioners. It is a level of practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. This is underpinned by a master’s level award or equivalent that encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research, with demonstration of core capabilities and area specific clinical competence.

Advanced Practice embodies the ability to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families and carers. It includes the analysis and synthesis of complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to enhance people’s experience and improve outcomes.

The ACP Workforce Database

A system-wide audit will populate a system-level database to inform workforce planning and provision for current, and aspiring ACPs. Several attempts to scope the ACP workforce have been attempted in the last few years. Problems with organisational engagement and consent to information sharing are just some of the problems that have hampered delivery to date. To create an effective single database, the workforce needs to have confidence in the quality of the information collected, its security and understand its intended purpose. Openness and transparency are critical success factors. This document sets this out and includes a data capture form for completion.

Aim:

To scope current and future ACPs across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to inform current and future workforce planning.

Objectives:

To create a single system database of:

In-role ACPs
In-training ACPs that have a future role in service identified
In training ACPs that do not have a future role in service identified
Aspiring ACPs

To use the database to inform organisational and system level workforce planning, that will include (the list is not exhaustive):

Career pathway communications
ACP Community of Practice engagement
Training needs analysis
Commissioning of future training provision
Informing service investment plans / business cases

Establishing the ACP Workforce Database

The database will be created by CIOS ACP Baseline Workforce Audit Task and Finish Group, formed under the CIOS Health and Care Academy. Members are:

Clare Rotman, Associate Director of AHP (CFT/RCHT)
Dr Frazer Underwood, Associate Director of NMAHP Research, Innovation and Improvement (RCHT/CFT)

Individual staff members being asked to complete the workforce audit will have been identified by their line-mangers to meet the criteria highlighted in Objective 1 above.

Individuals will complete the data capture form (Appendix 1)* and return it to the CIOS ACP Baseline Workforce Audit Task and Finish Group.

The CIOS Health and Care Academy will host, on behalf of the wider system a password protected database on an NHS server. Access will be controlled and monitored by the Academy Principal, to comply with the data sharing agreement.

An annual update will be required to maintain an accurate database.

Use of the Database

Objective 2 sets out a non-exhaustive list of intended uses of the database. Information analysed and reported will always be anonymous/non-identifiable to the individual. No personal information will be shared with third parties. Individuals will always be contacted to request explicit permission for personal information to be shared.

Multi-professional Framework for Advanced Practice in England 2025

This updated Multi-professional Framework for Advanced Practice in England 2025 marks an important step in the development of advanced practice in this country.

Since the publication of the first framework in 2017, advanced practitioners have played a key role in managing complex patient needs and championing innovation, quality, and compassionate care in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.

Advanced practice now reaches far beyond its traditional settings, making a difference in areas like primary care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, education, housing, and justice. Advanced practitioners from a wide variety of professional backgrounds—nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists, clinical scientists, optometrists, and practitioner psychologists—are improving patient care, bridging gaps in services, and supporting sustainable, patient-focused healthcare.

This framework offers a clear and practical guide for those developing their expertise in the 4 key areas of clinical care, leadership, research, and education and incorporates updated evidence, insights, and contributions from advanced practitioners. Whether you are an advanced practitioner yourself, aspire to be one, or are relying on or supporting the development of advanced practitioners in your area, we urge you to explore the framework and build on the vital contributions these roles make.

HEE advanced practice ePortfolio route

Recognising Experienced Advanced Practitioners

The ePortfolio (supported) Route is designed to enable recognition of existing, experienced advanced practitioners.

This route is ideal for those who:

Are currently working in advanced practice roles
Completed their advanced practice education before 2017, or through a non-accredited programme

While completing this route is voluntary, it demonstrates your commitment and plays a key role in ensuring that advanced practitioners are recognised.

If you have undertaken most of the advanced practice pathway but are not entitled to the digital badge you may want to explore the e-portfolio route, if you have more than a couple of modules to undertake you may be better served taking the funded pathway for year 2 or 3. Centre for Advancing Practice Portal

The Centre for Advancing Practice Portal is a web-based tool that enables practitioners to record evidence of their experience, training and continuing professional development (CPD) for their entire career.

It is the most valuable tool for the standardised recognition of advancing practice education, training, and experience for practitioners.

Practitioners can apply for recognition via an accredited programme.
Practitioners on the ePortfolio (supported) Route will need to sign up to complete the route.
Practitioners can keep a CPD log of the training and events attended throughout the year. Store CPD certificates of attendance in one place.

In November 2020, the Centre for Advancing Practice published ‘Workplace Supervision for Advanced Clinical Practice: An integrated multi-professional approach for practitioner development’. We have created nine videos to accompany this guidance, providing insights about best practice in multi-professional supervision for advanced practice. First Contact Practitioner FCP advice on AP eportfolio

Anyone choosing to utilise the portfolio route to AP will need to apply via the supported ePortfolio route. They will need to map to the multi-professional framework using L7 evidence (taught or equivalence).

This means if a paramedic is completing a roadmap in primary care this is the stage 3 part.

As you know Stage 1 + 2 can be verified in practice by a RMSV but this is not the case for AP. If they successfully go onto to complete stage 3 via the ePortfolio route they will then be a primary care ACP.
